Legacies of Exera: Campaign Primer

Legacies of Exera is a new Dungeons and Dragons campaign I am a player in. It is based on the Dungeon Master's homebrew world that the Dungeon Master and his cousin created when they were both in high school many moons ago. I am personally excited to play in this game for two main reasons. The first one being is  I have gamed with this Dungeon Multiple multiple times before as well as some of the other players and it is always a good time. The second main reason is that I am always a fan of playing in homebrew world as it gives me something new to interact with and explore that I do not have meta knowledge about.

Exera is the third planet away from its sun, Pia, which is a yellow star.  Exera is orbited by one moon, Estoria.  Exera shares its orbit around Pia with nine additional planets.

Exera is covered in five major oceans and has seven continents and numerous islands.  Each of these continents are populated by people of numerous species.  A central supercontinent is made up of the continents of Wostrela, Meihua, and Imris.  Southeast of the supercontinent is the continent of Azewix, along with its chains of islands.  There is a supercontinent in the western hemisphere of the world stretching down into the southern polar regions which is made up of the continents of Quapitraes, Qepuwoa, and Icaiqone.

The westernmost continent of Exera's central supercontinent is Wostrela.  It has a diverse landscape inhabited by numerous races and cultures, including humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, gnomes, orcs, and others.  It is covered by numerous human kingdoms and empires.  Separated from Wostrela by the Salina Sea is the southern continent of Imris.  It is the most tropical of the continents, having a climate and vegetation range from equatorial rainforests, tropical deserts, and savannah grasslands, to high mountains and rocky shores.  It has a diverse landscape inhabited by numerous races and cultures, including humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, leonin, and others.  It is covered by numerous human kingdoms and empires as well as large tribal populations.

The easternmost continent of Exera's central supercontinent is Meihua, separated from Wostrela by the Inner Sea.  It has a diverse landscape littered with major mountain systems, plateaus, plains, steppes, and deserts.  It has a diverse population made up of numerous races and cultures, including humans, elves, gnomes, halflings, orcs, kitsune, yuan-ti, and others. It is covered by numerous human kingdoms and empires and is dominated by diverse religious sects and philosophical schools.

Azewix is southeast of Meihua.  The comtinent includes mainland Azewix as well as several island chains.  Azewix contains a diverse biosphere with fascinating wildlife in its biomes: the desert comprises most of Azewix as the continent's largest biome, surrounded by grasslands. Farther north, we find lush tropical forests, and to the south, temperate forests teem with exciting species.  It has a diverse population made up of numerous races and cultures, including humans, dwarves, elves, plasmoids, grung, selkies, and merfolk.  It is covered by numerous primitive tribes, but has no kingdoms or empires.

The northernmost continent of the western supercontinent is Quapitraes.  It has a diverse landscape made up of rivers, forests, deserts, mountain areas, and plains.  It is connected to Meihua by a small arctic landbridge in the far north.  It is mostly separated from Meihua by the Sanguine Ocean and from Wostrela by the Tempest Ocean.  It has a diverse population made up of numerous races and cultures, including humans, gnomes, halflings, goblins, tabaxi, and others.  It is covered by numerous primitive tribes as well as a few human empires ruled by cults worshipping bloody gods.

Mostly separated from Quapitraes by the Azure Sea is Qepuwoa.  It has a landscape of mountain highlands, river basins, and coastal plains, largely covered in dense jungles.  It has a diverse population made up of numerous races and cultures, including humans, halflings, lizardmen, tabaxi, tortles, orcs, yuan-ti, hadozee, grungs, and others.  It is covered by numerous primitive tribes as well as a few human empires and kingdoms found in its mountain highlands.

Icaiqone is connected to Qepuwoa by an icy land bridge.  Icaiqone is located at the southern polar region of Exera.  It has an arctic climate and it is the world's highest, driest, windiest, coldest, and iciest continent.  It is seasonally populated by nomadic primitive human tribes along with permanent settlements of frostlings, aptinodes, selkies, aarakocra, and darfallen, mostly found along its coasts.  It is unknown to the people of most of the continents and those who are aware of it largely believe it to be mythical.

There are innumerable and varied stories about the creation of the world and the cosmos.  However, most include some variation of the gods creating and putting the cosmos and world to order and creating the various creatures living on the world of Exera.

Most of these stories include a war between various gods to establish primacy over the cosmos, the world, and its people.  All stories describe this war as a time when gods walked on Exera along with its people, fighting for dominance.  The gods and their people forged alliances in their wars.  Their wars were destructive and genocidal, so the gods made a truce to leave Exera and to not influence the affairs of their creations.

After the truce between the gods, the wars between the creatures of Exera did not end.  Though, less destructive, the wars remained bloody.  The gods were replaced by great heroes, who led their armies, generally still invoking the names of the gods. Great wizards and sorcerors were incorporated as major powers on the warring sides. The powerful magic used by the creatures of the world was used to calm the wars and establish a new order.  Wizards established schools of wizardry to carefully guard the secrets of magic, primarily along family lines.  These magical schools started the establishment of cities.  Great dwarven kingdoms were established in mountain strongholds.  Magical elven cities closed themselves off to other cultures.  Human cities built around magic schools began forming kingdoms and eventually vast empires, leading to the Age of Man.

Humans, with their adventurous spirit and drive for dominion, began establishing kingdoms and empires built around powerful magical schools.  Humanity spread far and wide, dominating the landscape as well as many of the other races of the world.

The chaotic evil gods, seeing the order established by the schools of magic, were determined to reshape the world and bring an end to the established order of Exera.  They broke the truce and returned to walk among the people of Meihua in the forms of powerful avatars.  This breaking of the truce led to the return of the gods.  While they did not generally walk on Exera, even in avatar form, they did all they could to influence the affairs of Exera without returning to a state of chaos and destruction like that during the Age of the Gods.  This led to the reestablishing of religious cults and sects.

As time went on, the empires and kingdoms of man fought against each other and against other creatures for dominance of the world.  This led to a new age of heroes, who instead of leading armies, sought adventure for various reasons.  Some for the thrill, others to help establish order and justice, some for power or wealth.  During this time groups of heroes established a new order in the world and opened up trade and alliances spanning the globe.

One such adventurer, Prince Lalor of Rilos established an alliance of marriage between the Kingdom of Rilos in Wostrela and the distant Jia Empire of Zheng in Meihua.
